Love and War

Winter had finally come to Saidal. Snow drifted and swirled amidst the lofty towers, and every roof was coated in a layer of white powder. The cold weather had little effect on the city’s inhabitants, who carried about their usual business under cover of thick coats and fur-lined caps. Little snow accumulated on the streets that wasn’t immediately trampled down by the shuffling traffic of the city.

Prince Eledrith and Lady Morwenna walked along the fortified wall separating the port from the city proper. A statue of Atlor stood atop the battlement, looking over the sea. The maritime god’s robes and hair were carved as if flowing in the wind. While the arm that held his spear was intact, the other had broken off long ago. Four bodyguards followed the couple, and per Eledrith’s request, they remained just out of earshot. While the circumstances of the stroll were not ideal, the couple’s view was breathtaking. The gray sea extended indefinitely, white-capped waves crashing in the wind. A soft white sky loomed above, and the sun’s harsh rays diffused by the snowfall. Massive trading ships appeared like little toy boats from where the couple stood, and a feeling of peace came with being so distant from the chaos of the world below. Morwenna loved this feeling. Auburn hair flowing in the breeze, she leaned against the parapet and took a deep breath of the crisp sea air.

The prince watched his love as she looked to the horizon; they both were entranced by what they saw. It had been a month since Sir Garrick had left, and in that time, Eledrith had spent nearly every day with Morwenna. While Count Ordric and King Torvaren schemed incessantly, their children turned to each other for comfort, and a relationship absent of political motivations grew. The two seldom partook in activities typical of nobles. Instead, they spent every spare moment retreating to the isolated, beautiful places of the city to cultivate what they truly cherished; their love for each other.

Morwenna turned from the sea and looked at her prince. His hair was nearly as fair as the falling snow, and his pale, elegant face made him seem like a figure of legend. Noticing her gaze, Eledrith cracked a shy smile.

“What are you smiling about?” she asked, a coy eyebrow raised.

“I’m just enjoying the view.”

Rolling her eyes, Morwenna brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. “The view?”

“Yeah,” he replied, a sheepish smile on his face.

“Alright, your majesty,” she said.

Morwenna looked back to the sea, where a handful of ships bobbed in the turbulent bay. The many oars that extended from the side of each triangular-sailed boat churned and struggled against the currents. “Have you ever wanted to sail?” she asked.

“Of course. When I was a boy, Garrick told me stories of places on the other side of the ocean. Supposedly, there are places like Kihanjir that haven’t been touched by men and are total wildernesses. I’d want to go somewhere like that.”

“That’d be the worst!” said Morwenna, “You’d be all alone, and you’d be sleeping in a tent every night.
